Meet Naiara Leon

Naiara is a sophomore student in the Calvert Academy Dual Diploma program. She is the debate club president and loves playing tennis and learning to surf. Naira wants to grow up to be a surgeon. Read more about Naira’s career goals.

What is your career goal?

My goal is to receive a bachelor's degree in medicine/surgery in the United Kingdom. I want to be a surgeon.

What inspired you to pursue this particular career path?

Growing up, I always hated hospitals—but as I got older, I started to understand and see how those in healthcare sacrificed so much and I became inspired. I admire the help that healthcare workers provide in life-or-death situations.

Can you share a specific moment or experience that solidified your career goals?

One day my dad accidentally grabbed a knife the wrong way and hurt himself badly. I went into automatic “save him mode” and helped as much as possible before he got to the hospital.

Are there any role models or mentors who have influenced your career aspirations?

Yes! There are a lot of healthcare workers on my dad's side of the family. We have doctors, a nutritionist, and Veterinarians. I grew up in a healthcare household.

What challenges do you anticipate facing on your journey toward your career goals?

I know that being a doctor takes a while, but I am prepared to be in school for 15 years to reach my goal. Although I am worried that I will be homesick when I go to the U.K., I am still super excited.

Do you have any advice for other students who are also striving to achieve similar career goals?

My advice for them is to stay dedicated.
