Will AI Replace Scientists?

Artificial Intelligence is transforming the way we understand the world. From analysing enormous amounts of information to predicting complex patterns, AI can accomplish tasks that would take scientists years to complete.
AI is already becoming a powerful scientific tool. In astronomy, for example, algorithms can analyze millions of images and identify galaxies, stars, and unusual cosmic events far faster than humans. According to NASA, researchers used artificial intelligence to examine nearly 100 million images from the Hubble Space Telescope and identify more than 1.300 unusual cosmic objects, a task that would have been extremely difficult to perform manually.
In biology and medicine, AI can help researchers discover potential drugs and recognize patterns in genetic data. Its ability to process enormous amounts of information allows scientists to focus on questions that were previously impossible to investigate.
However, AI cannot fully replace scientists. Science is not simply about processing information; it is about asking meaningful questions, designing experiments, interpreting results, and deciding what discoveries mean. AI can determine a pattern, but a scientist must determine whether that pattern is significant and how it should be tested.
Rather than replacing scientists, AI will likely change what it means to be a scientist. Researchers who learn to work alongside AI may be able to explore more questions and make discoveries faster.
