Stellar Horizons: The Heat Death Of The Universe

Margarita is your Student Ambassador in Greece, leading a series of articles about Aerospace Engineering as part of her leadership project.

…Sarah’s story continued…

Sarah floated towards the glowing path, but the particles didn’t follow her. They stayed still, watching Sarah drift away.

She looked back as each particle began to glow brightly before disappearing. She grew anxious and began wondering why they did that, but before she could say anything, she felt reality stretching, expanding.

She sat upright and looked around frantically. She saw galaxies drifting apart, stars disappearing into the vast abyss in seconds.

She was alone, truly alone as the universe continued to expand.

“Is anyone here? Is anyone h-here with me?” she whispered and hoped to hear a voice…a sound…. Instead, she heard her own voice; she couldn’t point to the direction it was coming from: everywhere.

A sudden invisible wave carried her away until she was standing behind a glimmering barrier…and that’s when she saw the particles again.

“What’s happening?!” she almost shouted.

The particles were quiet, too quiet.

“You wanted answers. You keep asking the universe to reveal itself, and now…now she granted you your wish.”

A loud bang was heard; she turned around and gasped.

She saw what looked like the universe…expanding with tremendous force.

It reached a dead point… something called “maximum entropy,” the particles informed her.

That’s when the universe can’t withstand any further thermodynamic processes.

“It’s scary…but it feels so alive”, she whispered.

She braced herself as she watched a theory turning into an action.

All matter started decaying at vast speeds. It was like watching a movie on 2x speed.

Black holes began evaporating, and light began bending towards them, trying to escape the end.

Stars lost their glow, slowly disappearing. Galaxies now began fading. Each dot that represented a solar system or a star began disappearing.

Until there was nothing left, energy became uniformly distributed, leaving a cold, dark, and empty universe, with no further physical work or life possible.

And yet, she was alive as an observer. She turned to the particles and smiled.

“Thank you...for giving me this chance…of…of learning the truth, feeling the mystery of the universe.”

The particles grew bright; they performed a circle around her, and slowly began fading one at a time.

She felt alive, she knew her purpose, and she knew that now that her journey was over, she had to return home.

She closed her eyes and woke up in her bed.

She rubbed her eyes and yawned.

“What a dream,” she whispered. She believed that it was just a dream and nothing else.

Standing up, she made her way to her garden holding a mug of coffee.

As she stepped outside, a loud crash was heard. The mug was shattered at her feet, and coffee spilled everywhere.

But she didn’t care; she just stared blankly at the donut beach float next to her.
