My IAAC Competition Experience: Final Round

Margarita is your Student Ambassador in Greece, leading a series of articles about Aerospace Engineering as part of her leadership project. 

Participating in the final round of the International Astronomy & Astrophysics Competition was a rewarding opportunity to apply my knowledge in a rigorous academic environment.

The final examination took place from my hotel room, an unconventional yet memorable setting that highlighted the accessibility of international academic competitions. The examination demanded far more than factual knowledge. It required time management and the ability to use analytical reasoning. We had 40 minutes to answer both multiple choice and one-word answers questions. Each question was either worth one or two points and for each one you had one to two minutes to answer.

This experience also emphasized the importance of perseverance. Reaching the final round was the culmination of months of preparation, continuous learning, and a genuine enthusiasm for understanding the universe. While competitions naturally recognize achievement, their greatest value lies in the skills they cultivate: resilience, discipline, curiosity, and the confidence to tackle unfamiliar challenges.

Looking back, I consider this experience not only an academic milestone but also a meaningful step in my journey within STEM. It strengthened my interest in astronomy and astrophysics while reinforcing my aspiration to contribute to scientific research in the future.

I highly encourage anyone who has an interest in astronomy and astrophysics to take part in this incredible competition. Do not let the fear of a rigorous exam hold you back, as the true value of this experience stretches far beyond scores or awards. It is a unique opportunity to challenge yourself, test your analytical thinking and connect with a global community of students who share your passion for the universe.

Looking ahead, I am already determined to take part again next year to build upon what I have learned. The first experience gave me invaluable insight into the level of analytical reasoning and time management required to succeed at this level.
